Cheers,
I am trying to help my wife’s great aunt price and sell her recently deceased husbands woodworking tools and I was hoping to possibly get some help getting the tools priced in time for the tool sale this Saturday. Here is the link to my craigslist add http://twinfalls.craigslist.org/tls/1449057056.html
In that post is a link to flickr that shows most of the major tools, if you have a good handle on what a fair price for used tools in great condition would go for, please comment on the flickr picture or post on this thread with the tool name and price.
Also if you know of any other online communities that would be interested in helping out, please by all means re-post this.
Thank you very much,
Jake Schumacher

Can we assume the sale is near Twin Falls, Idaho?
To a large extent, the local market typically dictates prices, so searching past TF Craigslist listings might give you the best indicator.
Yes the sale is going to be in Twin Falls, Idaho. Unfortunately the Twin Falls Craigslist is still in it's infancy as far as developing a community and generating a lot of sales.
You might consider putting up "Tool Sale" signs, if local ordinances allow such things. Kinda like garage sale signs, but with the expectation of more realistic prices.
I don't think it would be money poorly spent, considering how much is for sale, if you were run an ad in the Idaho Statesman and the Pocatello paper for the sale. Your only 2 hours or so south of Boise and almost the same from Pocatello.
People drive pretty far for a good tool sale.BB
Jake some of the tools, especially router bits and other cutting tools are too difficult to price just looking at photos.Try and sell them as one or two large lots.
Dremel scrollsaw $80.00
jet cabinet saw $750.00 There is no difference except age between the blue jet saw and the white ones.About ten years ago, Jet chaged from blue to white.
Dust collector ,1 hp $100.00 2hp $150.00 I think the pic is a 2hp.
Hitachi slidesaw, $250.00
radial arm sears, $75.00
Drill press $175.00 this is a pretty good quality dp, well worth the price
Sears router $15.00
makita router if 3hp $90.00 1hp $45.00
Pc sawboss $80.00
makita saw $10.00 This saw with the masonry blade and broken guard would be a thrown in in my opinion.
Grizzly planer molder $375.00
Bosch bulldog rotohammer $150.00
spindle sander $ 120.00
spira rotozip $15.00
grinder $20.00
hold downs with green wheels $ 10.00 each
air tools $100.00 for the lot.
I did not include everything, just what I know about.
If the buyers are fair and not vultures you should get close to these prices.Good luck with the sale.
mike
I think Mike's given you some pretty sound prices to go by. By looking at the pics, I think he must have taken pretty good care of them. Some even seem to have been used very little.
Other prices:
Delta tenon jig = $50-60
Appliance dolly = $25-35
Pancake air comp= $40-50
If that's a handmade toolbox= priceless.
Didn't see the swiss made chisels and carving knives. If they're pfiles , they usually fetch a pretty fair price on e-bay.
Jake,
I am also helping a widow deal with liquidating a woodworking and metal working shop. Mike's prices seem pretty much in line but I think he may be a bit high on the Jet cabinet saw and perhaps the Grizzly moulder/planer. Those may be good starting prices. If in good condition, I wouldn't go less than $600 on the saw and $275 on the Grizzly. One other poster is spot on if the carving chisels are Pfeil. I noted a set of 12 of these chisels go for $300 recently on Sawmill Creek. Your likelihood at getting this in a garage/tool sale venue is almost nil unless you just have the right person show up. Try having a good idea of what the stuff goes for new. If in good condition, Asian made stuff is probably 40-55% of new. If American made, 50- 60% of new. If European, 50-70% of new.
I haven't found a garage sale venue to be particularly good at selling the good stuff because folks that go to these are pretty much looking for bargains. The price you will get will depend highly on your local market and how fast you want to liquidate it.
Lots of good advice here. You have to get the seller to answer one question. Do I want to get the most money or do I want to get rid of all the stuff. Once that is determined you can price and accept offers accordingly.
Best of luck and "good on ya" for helping her out!

"Close enough for government work=measured with a micrometer, marked with chalk and cut with an axe"
Thanks guys, this is a big help. I think my strategy is to have a set price list for Saturday and then take down some ones name, number and price they are willing to pay if we don't agree on the price at the sale, so I can contact them later. I am going to post the craigslist add in the Boise and Pocatello sites as-well. The tool chest is not handmade but still beautiful, I had to tell myself before going into the shop that I was not interested in any of the tools myself and this has helped the process.
"---tell myself----not interested----"
That must have been at least a semi-difficult decision full of moral dilema. It would be easy to take advantage of such a situation. Good job!
Regards and good luck!
