Making my wife a set of poker chips for our anniversary. I have lathed down some 2x2x24″ Brazilian Kingwood turning stock. Will color stain the OD of the dowels and then slice into 4mm chips. I would then like to woodburn our initials on one side and anniversary date on the other.
My problem is, I don’t know what would be the best thing to use to finish the face of the chip. This wood is already a beautiful dark color with outstanding grain so I don’t want to anything that would darken it any futher (like linseed oil). I am looking for a deep, rich finish that would not change the color. Any suggustions on what to use?
Thanks
Shannon

I wouldn't recommend shellac as the final finish, but I would suggest you put a coat of Behlens seal-coat on first. I put some wipe-on poly over Kingwood years ago and had to strip it and start over. Kingwood has some natural oils in it that can inhibit some finishes from curing on it. The shellac worked well, then I applied poly over that. One of the waterbased polys might not give you the same curing problems and would also not darken the color either.
If you build it he will come.
