Help! I found a beautiful light mahogany dresser with curved drawers in a resale shop. The guy took another piece they set on top of it, and reveled some scratches. The scratches did NOT PENETRATE the veneer, just “dented it and the finish. before i could stop him the shop guy put some OLD English scratch remover for light woods on the beautiful book marked veneer. I watched in horror asthe mahogany which is light and brown wasstained a deep red wherer the scratches were. I cannot get then out. mineral spirits and very light sanding where the scratches were did not do the trick. I am afraid to sane through the veneer. any other solutions??? it an therwise beautiful piece that was sicounted but I still need to convicne my wife we should have bought it with the not awful looking scratches!

You would be better served to take this question to the "Ask the Experts" part of this forum. There's a lot of knowledge over there. Good luck/
If you have strip the old finish off you can try a variety of solvents like MEK, Acetone, xylene, Naphtha, Lacquer thiner, etc. After soaking the effected area then use a high pressure air nozzle to "blow" the stuff out. May take several times to effect a good change. Its oil and you need to find a solvent to "float" it out. When it looks good let it sit over night to see if any more has wicked to the surface. Repeat if necessary. Just be glad he did not use the dark stuff.
