Help with new jointer and bandsaw
Delta or Jet 8″ jointer (the around $1000 models), I could use some help. I would also like to upgrade to a bandsaw larger than 14″ but the only thing in my price range is the 18″ or 20″ Jet bandsaws. Large Delta’s amd Powermatic’s are industrial and expensive and I dont see any other options (just dont really want a Grizzly). I have heard from several people that the trunnions on the Jet machines seem small and that the lower blade guide is difficult to reach. Any opinions, thoughts?

Can't reply on the bandsaws but for the jointer I would go with the Jet . I have the DJ-20 which is out of your price range. The Delta Professional model, I have heard, may have some issues with warped fences. Although, some people report no problems at all with this unit. I have not heard any negatives with the Jet 8" model. I believe the Jet model is around $1200 which is not too far from the DJ-20 $1300-$1400 - may be able to catch it on sale somewhere. I have also heard of some good reports of the new Grizzly 8" - four knives longer bed like the DJ-20. May want to ask or check into the Sunhill, Bridgwood, and General 8" as well. I think they are in the $1,000 range.

I will tell you my thoughts and you can ponder or disregard. On the jointer, the new Grizzly 8" is a bargain. So are the Sunhill (I have the excellent Sunhill 6") and Bridgewood. This is where I would go.
I would wait on the bandsaw and save the extra required to get the Mini-Max 16" which has the same re-saw height as their 18" which is 12" approx. If you must have something now, you will have to make a decision on the Jet's. I also, am not interested in the larger Grizzly BS's at this point. The jointer is a different story.
Just my personal thoughts....
Good Luck...

Why?

Because I don't have enough input on the Griz BS at this point to have a solid opinion. I am not near a Griz dealer in Atlanta. They don't make the two major shows here, and I haven't seen that much feed-back on this forum from those that might have the bigger Griz BS's.
A BS has a lot of working parts. I really prefer to see it in action so I know those parts work properly and in co-operation with each other to get the bottom line done correctly and efficiently. I am not bad-mouthing the larger Griz's (the new Griz 14" is a definite bargain), I just don't have the info I need to endorse it one way or the other.
Hope that's answers your question...

Yes it does, Sarge, and thanks. I was concerned that you might have found some particular information that the Griz big BS's were less than good value.
I will probably be retooling my shop in a major way this summer and am thinking of some major Grizzly purchases, the 19" BS being one likely candidate, as they are not too far from me to get up there and check them out personally. The BS's are built under ISO 9001 certification so at least they shouldn't be terrible buys.
If anyone out there has experience, good or bad, with any particular Grizzly WW products, I'd be interested in reading about it.

As I said, Griz doesn't do the show circuit as far as I know. I personally think that is a mistake. I would like to get a closer look at their products, but the closest showroom to Atlanta is Missouri and Pa. I think they would greatly increase their market share if they went to the shows so the buying public could see for themselves they have some excellent products at a reasonable price.
As with all companies, there are hits and misses. I tend to crawl over a product from stem to stern with micrometer, etc. I just don't have the opportunity to do that when they don't bring the product close to me. I can tell you I have seen the cabinet saw, jointer and the new 14" BS that local WW's have purchased. I wouldn't hesitate on all 3. Just not that many that purchase the big Griz BS's here.
I'll keep my eyes and ears open for feed and relay if I get any scuttle, good or bad.
Pleasant evening to you, sir...

Hi Lee
I have the 1023 10" table saw, good quality for the money. The only problem in 4 years was a set of arbor bearings, but I was cutting a bunch of foil faced foam insulation and I think the foil chips helped toast the bearings.Pretty easy fix and Bearings are cheep.
I also have the older 8" jointer, excellent machine right out of the box! 3 years old now.
I just ordered the new 17" bandsaw and a table top milling machine. I'll pick them up next weekend. Stay tuned.

Please post your thoughts on the 17" BS after you put a few miles on it. We don't get to see them down south much and nobody local has one I can check out. Very curious.
Thanks in advance........

Thanks, Bill. I'll be very interested in what you have to say about the 17" BS. It's obviously made in the same plant as the 19"er.
I will watch for your further comments.

I have just sold my Bridgewood 6" jointer to my brother-in-law and am buying the Bridgewood 8". The quality of their equipment seems to be very good. They open, set up, and test every piece of equipment before they ship it. Others may do that also, I don't know.
