Hi maybe someone can help me.
I love old tools and when I saw this Old Glue Pot I had to have it.
Hold-Heet Automatic 1 Quart Glue Pot made by Russell Electric Co. Chicago
The pot is copper lined with a aluminum pot that fits inside and a heavy wire thing that fits down in the aluminum pot.
What is the heavy wire thing for? Should I put any water in the copper pot ?
I ran it for about 45 min. I had water in the aluminum pot only – I checked the temp. with a meat thermometer the temp. stopped at 185 degrees F.
Is this to high a temp. ? I seem to think that I had read that Hide glue should not be heated over 150 degrees F.?
I assume the pot was made for hide glue- I don’t think it has been used very much.
Could maybe the thermostat need cleaning ? Or do you think it just needs to be used heat it up let it cool to free it up?
Thanks Ron

Ron-
I don't know anything about the temperature of a glue pot, but I'd say that heavy wire thingy is for wiping your glue brush on.
I tried the glue pot again and let it heat for over a hour and it boiled the water. I'm sure that it should not get that hot.
I would like to repair it but I don't know where to start
Thanks for your help

DOn't know if this helps, as I'm not familiar with old glue pots, but;
Can you take it apart or open it to see the internal workings.
New products use rivets, older were screwed together (hopefully)
If so, follow the wiring inside, besides the main heating coil and
on/off switch (if it has one) there should also be wired in line ####thermostat.
If you can get to it, sometimes their adjustable. If not, you will
need to find a replacement that has the proper setting for your use.
You could also modify an adjustable thermostat to do the job.
Good luck and let me know if that helps.
I'll try to answer any other questions if I can.
I'll be away all weekend, so there may be a delay.

I found an old one also, but it would only go to 115 deg. Great looking old thing. Double boiler style, with a copper pot. So, I gave it to my step son, the wizzard of all things mechanical, and he got it apart. One of theating elements was disconnected, and he reconnected. Then it was too hot. There are 3 heating wires, so three bimetal thermostats. He is playing with them now, bending them and such, to find a 145-150 deg. temp. Hope I gave him the right numbers.
I am not into elc. so I thought I would check to see If Hold Heet was still around . I found a phone # and address on the internet & gave them a call- They told me to send it to them and they would let me know how much the cost of repair .
They must of been making Glue Pots for ever, the Glue Pot I have is really old.
