I have this very old hewing hatchet, right handed, used for rough flattening boards. As you can see in the photo is bended (the back of the blade is not flat anymore)… My question is, can be repaired? And how? I guess trying to cold bend it back would break. Or, it was shaped like this intentionally, although i never saw this type of hatchet bent like this…
I would appreciate your comments and opinions about it.
Thank you
Paul

Test fit a handle, it might be set up that way to save your knuckles.
Some were made offset like that, others had offset handles. As MJ said, knuckle-saving technology.
@MJ, thank you for reply. You might be right. I tested and it seems that bent is making the grip more confortable, you dont need to twist your wrist that much, it seems more *ergonomical* Of course would need a curved handle.
Thanks for the tip... i will try to work with it as it is for now.
@eddo234 i know about the off set, the off set or single beveled hatches i have seen dont have that bent in the blade, the back is totally flat, like this:

i guess you were refering.to.this
That's one style of hewing hatchet. Long-handled hewing axes had a handle that was radically offset to the head.
Follansbee uses another hatchet that does have an offset handle: https://pfollansbee.wordpress.com/2012/12/13/the-endless-look-at-hewing-hatchets/
I think the picture of the one from the OP does look bent though. From the last picture, it might be left-handed?
If I wanted that bent, I would not do it myself. I'd find a blacksmith, have then heat it, bend it, and heat treat the edge.
It is right handed, you can see in these photos more clear, im holding it.with my right hand.
Thanks. Sometimes pictures get posted as mirror images.
A blacksmith could do it. I agree, I wouldn’t try it cold. You’re right, it was more common to have the blade flat, with the eye and butt offset, but some were made with an offset blade.
Indeed, somehow similar to the ones in the last post. Now i do find it very comfortable to use.
