Hello All,
My name is Branko, I am an antique restorer in NY, I mostly deal with wooden antiques and have a wealth of knowledge on the subject ( so I am told). I have decided to make videos sharing my knowledge on youtube and I was hoping you will enjoy it.. Here is my latest video on Shellac / French polish. I hope someone finds it useful.

hi branko, and welcome. if you don't mind a little constructive criticism;
- you make too many assumptions about the skill and experience of your audience. that's typical of masters that have been doing what you do for so long. the rest of us noobs need a bit more hand holding. what kind of shellac (color and cut)? how much of it? what type of pigment? how much of it? what kind of brush?... these details that are second nature to you are very important to the rest of us to be able to reproduce your success.
- the single camera angle pointing down at the table misses way too many details. especially when you do something just out of the frame.
- consider investing in a lavaliar microphone.
Thank you for the feedback.Hmmm i never considered that, I will strive in the future to explain more what I am doing, with what and why.
The camera feedback was quite unanimous, get closer to the action so no details are missed. To that end I bought a DSLR style camera with some nice lenses and a lavalier microphone.
My next video about restoring finishes damaged by sticky tape and duck tape will be shot on the new equipment.
Now I just have to learn how to use all this. :)
Seconding the above comments.
You have a great voice for YouTube.
It would have been nice to have seen:
1. An overview of what you are trying to fix.
2. Close-up shots of the dye mixing and crack-filling, showing technique
3. More of you (not essential but it makes the video more personable.
The music was a bit intrusive. You also need to be careful of copyright. Although Strauss' work is no longer in copyright, the particular performance might well be.
With good editing and a better mic, this could be an enjoyable video to watch as well as useful. Why not try to emulate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeeV7GwQiJo in terms of quality, but add your own style. I'd be interested in seeing more, especially if you fix the audio quality issue.
Thank you for your in-depth response and for taking the time to find that video that you shared with me.
I have now realized I need to re-organize how I make these videos, they must have a definite structure:
1. Showing what we are fixing in detail with an explanation.
2. Detailed shots of the process and the equipment used
3. The results of my work in detail.
Yes, the music was a common complaint in these videos, in the future, I don't think I will put any when I am speaking.
I have two more videos I can put up with the end result of the work. Would you like to see them?
I do an occasional French polish (on commission) and I have to know, why garnet shellac? I prefer super blonde for clarity.
