Hi,
I just built a wall-mounted instrument rack, and would like to attach it to the wall without any visible screws. It’s basically a 48″ long 1 x 8 with dowels in it. Any clever tricks for hidden fasteners?

How much weight are you talking about? What kind of wall?
Makes a differance in the answers you might get.

Figure about 50 lbs max, mounted on a plaster wall with studs behind it.
You could use a french cleat.
A strip of wood fastened to the wall, with one edge cut at 45 degrees.
The cleat fastened to your rack is also cut at 45 but upside down.
1/4" thick would be enough.
Or pull a couple of dowels, put screws in the holes (if they are not through) and put the dowel back in.

We have hung some 85 to 90 lb. white boards with oak veneered partical board cabinet doors on them using the Z clips. These units have about an 1/8" recess in the backs so the 1 x 4 frame stays flush to the wall.
For what he is hanging he might need to rout a 1/8 to 3/16 recess in the back of the board for it to lay flat agianst the wall. If he hits two studs in 48" and get clips rated for 30 lb each you solution is the way to go.

How about a keyhole bit? Rout two keyhole recesses in the back of your rack, and insert two pan-head screws in the wall. Easy to use, and no hardware to keep track of if you move.
