Hi Bob,
Im making a large mahogany vanity for a client. Ive recently bought a veneer hammer and glue pot and am squirming to try it out. The curved drawers will be veneered , am I taking a risk putting hide glue in an environment with ambient steam? Thanks for your time.
Sincerely,
Knecht

I think you are right in questioning the use of hide glue here. I would opt for something a little more resistant to moisture. My personal choice for veneering- especially in this case- would be unibond 800- totally waterproof and you can control the dry time. Use a vacuum bag or clamps and glue cauls. Save the veneer hammer and glue pot for another time (but definitely give it a try- its lots of fun!)

Dear Bob,
Youv'e set my mind at ease, Unibond it is. Have you ever tried the vacuum system from James Town Distributors? I have used a larger vaccum in the shop I used to work in,and we had issues with over heating the unit in the middle of the night and popping a fuse. This scares me to death. My own shop now resides 200 ft from my house and I don't want anything to do with overheating anything, what system do you use? Thanks for your initial response.
Sincerely,
Knecht
The only bags I have used have been from Vacuum pressing systems in Maine. Have not heard anything about the one from Jamestown Dist. We have always run it overnight with a timer on it to shut it off when you want (regular household timer that you would use to control your lights if you were away on vacation. I have never had a problem with the Unibond. Hope it works out well for you.
