In order to make hide glue sizing what would one use as a water to dry glue ratio? I am using it prior to staining.
Thank you.

Have you instead considered using a dewaxed shellac, like Seal Coat?

Yes. I had such a good result when staining a fir fireplace mantle using hide gule it thought I would stay with it. May use shellac as I have heard so may positives about it.
Thank you
Glue size as a stain?Interesting.
Not as a stain. I use it to put on wood such as pine to avoid the uneveness of the stain. I have a commercial bottle that is almost used up and I would like to know how much a regular mixture formula would be diluted with water to achive the same results.
Bonka,It's really quite variable. There is no exact formula. Hide glue size is simply dilute hide glue. Disolve a volume of hot hide glue in 2 volumes of hot water.Rich
Bonka, I just saw that number the other day, and now can't remember it! I'll keep looking, but in the meantime, Jeff Jewitt sells ready-made sizing on this page [bottom] (for those who doubt your sanity, LOL). It has uses other than evening stain penetration. Poor Hide Glue, around forever, and nobody remembers his great talents.

I've always used the 1/10 for making sizing. I've used yellow glue and shellac with that ratio for years. Franklin sell premixed sizing as well.
