Hi all,
I’m using Cherry for the first time. I really like to see the grain in my finished pieces and this cherry has some unigue highlights in it that would look spectacular if brought out. What finish could I use to bring out that grain yet allow the piece to darken naturally? I plan to use tongue oil as a top coat.

Steve,
Tung oil will bring out the figure in cherry nicely. Cherry bleeds-back far worse than many other wood species I've finished with oil, so you'll have to be vigilant. Not to nag, but tung oil isn't really a "top coat;" it's a penetrating finish. If you want to apply a surface film to offer some protection, however, you can apply a varnish mix containing tung oil if you like.
Good luck with your project,
Paul
I like a blend of 2 parts boiled linseed oil 1 part turpentine and a dash of japan drier(1 teaspoon per quart of oil mix). Topcoat with super blond shellac or varnish for more protection.
thanks for the input! It is truely appreciated. I mixed tongue oil and thinner 50/50 and applied my first coat yesterday! I am extremely pleased with the results! I don't have anything place that can be considered a dust free room. I have to cut wood and apply the finish in the garage. If you know of anyway to keep the dust out of the finish so I don't have to buff it out, pass it on! In the past I have had to wet sand and finally polish my projects with rubby compound to make it a smooth finish. That's very dishearting after taking such care to make the wood perfect as you can.
Thanks,
Steve
Steve,
About every second or third coat of TO, let it dry overnight and then flatten the surface with steel wool. Use a tack cloth to get the nibs up. Then apply more oil. This gets you a really smooth surface as you build the finish.
Flattening and smoothing he wood is important, but you need to flatten the finish as well.

Thanks. I'd rather cut wood the apply a finish anyday!
