I’m looking for some hinges for a folding chess board that I’m making. I based the design of the board on some I found online. See the picture attached. Finding the right hinge is proving to be a challenge. I have no idea what the hinge is called, but the barrel must be oriented such that it protrudes in the opposite direction from the countersunk holes. I realize that the barrel will protrude above the box when closed. But the hinge must be flush with or below the mounting surface so that the chess board will sit flat. Any help is appreciated.

It looks like just a standard butt hinge. The wood has to be inlet around the barrel so that it will mate tightly when fully opened.
For smaller butt hinges, Lee Valley seems to have the best selection these days.
A good source for hinges is Horton Brasses. They also might be able to help you find the right hinge for your application if you call them up. Very helpful folks.
For my money Brusso makes the best butt, box and knife hinges around. A wide variety of sizes, install router templates and seriously precise/consistency. You can buy them through LV, but they are American made right here in NJ and so to buy them from a Canadian retailer means a very well traveled piece of hardware. You can order from Brusso directly...or if you need a few of them there is a nice discount at Tools For Working Wood out of Brooklyn.
