Hi there,
I am at the point of a new piece where I need to hange the doors. This is the first time I have made anything with doors that didnt require the standard butt hinge and to make things worse…I am not really familiar with all the options out there.
The piece is an Arts & Crafts inspired Entertainment center. The doors are 3/4″ thickness stock and need to be inset 1/2″ from the front of the legs. Doing so will align the doors with the lower rail. The top of the doors will seat against an applied stop attached to the top of the carcase. (This is a modified bookcase design)
I cant seem to find a hinge to accomplish this task…but then again, I am not certain what I should be looking for here.
Please help!

KGETCH- If I'm picturing this right a standard butt hinge won't work because of the 1/2" inset from the corner post. But being an arts and crafts style you're not going to want to use a standard euro-style inset hinge. I have seen somewhere ( maybe rockler or something similar) of a euro inset hinge with a barrel on it to look like a butt hinge. I'm assuming you don't have a stile 1/2" inset from the corner post and that is why a standard butt hinge won't work? It sounds like you'd have to build up the inside to accomodate a euro hinge. I think that I'd of changed the design a litle and added a stile so you could of used a regular butt hinge or something similar. Being it was a bookcase without doors, there was no use for a stile and that's why there wasn't one.

One option you might consider (if you haven't made the doors already) is to add a thin strip-3/8" thick or so-between the door and the leg. This is a detail used on some original Arts & Crafts pieces in this situation, and allows you to use regular butts. The strip is hardly noticeable, but the door will stop against the leg before it can open all the way.
The other option that occurs to me since this is an entertainment center is to use "pocket door" hinges & slides to retract the doors in to the cabinet.

Good Morning Guys,
Thanks for the responses.
John, the legs are the stiles. The original bookcase desgin does have doors. I used the design from the book, The Furniture of Gustov Stickley, and modified the dimensions to accomodate all my AV equipment.
I did not find info in the book on what type of hinge was used and the pictures dont have any closeup detail in that area. It looks to me like a butt hinge. A bookcase only needs to open 90 degrees to the face...I want the center to open closer to 180.
Bob, I have one of your books! Great stuff! I plan to build some of the pieces from it!
btw...I have aready made the doors and Pockets are out of the question too. The leg posts are also where the shelves will sit on shelf pins.
What I have found that might work is, a surface mount hinge...I think an "H" hinge with an inset side to mount the door.

A strap hinge is also true to A&C, and I can think of at least one configuration which will swing the door clear of the leg. You might be able to have something fabricated if the work warrants it.
Morning guys,
Thanks for all the responses! Bob...you were correct. I reread the section on the original bookcase. They do call for a 3/8" x 1" "L-shaped "Hinge Strip" mounted 1/4" in from the front face of the leg.
The info also specifies for box hinges. I suppose it helps to read the whole story!
Boy do I feel like an idiot now!
