I would like to know if there are hinges avilable that open a trap door in the floor so that it lays flat when open and the hinges do not protrude above the floor when closed thanks. adipaolo

Yes, one kind is Soss hinges available from most decently stocked wood working stores.

Soss hinges are,1:expensive 2: difficult to fit, 4: limited in its 'sweep'5: prone to plug up with dust 6: Better suited for vertical arrangement rather than horrizontal.
If you don't mind the hinges showing, You can use Butler table hinges which are inlaid into the wood for a flush appearance. If covered with carpet it wont 'telegraph' through the floor covering. Caution: These beautiful brass hinges are limited to 90 deg 'sweep', so must be restrained with chain or,some sort of stop. Stein.
