Hi folks,
I’m sure it’s been mentioned before, but what’s the usual cause for circular arcs being left in the sides of your mortise? I’m using the PM 719 and some inexpensive Jet chisels. Is it that there’s too much clearance between auger and chisel?
thanks!

That's the edge of the auger. The auger diameter may be slightly bigger than the outside of the chisel, or more likely the auger is wandering around a little within the confines of the chisel so it peeks out a little. I dunno if expensive bits lack this feature; I've only used inexpensive ones.
yup...
the auger was set using the 'dime spacer' method. I have done a fair amount of work with this 1/2" set in hard maple. I've kept the chisel honed up but haven't sharpened the auger. Maybe that's causing excessive wobble? You'd think the operation would make more noise if the auger is being forced against the chisel wall because it's dull??
I guess I'll try an even smaller gap than the dime to see if that helps, also sharpen the auger.. Still, doesn't seem like these would be the culprit?

I've had the same problem using the dime method with Delta, Jet, Multico and Fisch HC's. I don't think it's the HC's. I set them by feel just loose enough so they don't squeel and burn.John O'Connell - JKO Handcrafted Woodworking

Thanks John, and what, btw, is an Elcoholic?
If you're using your HC a lot, do you have any secret for keeping it running cool. I tried wax once - worked great for lube also - would work fine if you didn't need to follow up with glue or finish, eh?

Elcoholic? El Camino-aholic, see pix below.
For intensive HC sessions I tried a steady stream of compressed air which cooled the chisel but blew the waste all over the place. Next I tried the crevice tool with the shop vac which cleared the debris and provided some direct cooling, but got in the way. The Line-a-Lock? (articulated positionable vac line) system might be a good way to go, but it's way ovger priced IMHO. I've used Pam to lube bandsaw blades, maybe it would work for HC's as well.John O'Connell - JKO Handcrafted Woodworking
