I wanted to try hollow grounding of some of my old chisels, and have watched Andy Rae’s video a number of times on re-grinding a plane iron that is posted on FWW.
A part of the information shown is how to set a the angle on the bench grinder tool rest. Although I found the video informative, it wasn’t at all clear on how to set the angle properly in relation to the grinding wheel.
I have searched the web looking for definitive information and all I can find is others asking the same question, How do you set the correct angle prior to grinding. I hope that more information on this can be explained by someone out there or that FWW has room in the magazine for an article to describe this technique.
Thanks.

Start out by measuring the angle that the blade is at before you start, typically it is at, or close to, the angle you want.
Now just place the blade against the grinding wheel and, looking at it from the side, adjust it it forward or back in the clamp of the blade holder, or change the angle of the tool rest, until the bevel of the blade is flat against the surface of the wheel. This, and every other step in grinding, is much easier to do if you have a good bright light on the wheel.
If you need to change the angle from the existing one, advance or retract the blade in the clamp, or change the angle of the tool rest slightly. Once you have started grinding, you can check the angle being formed by the new grind and make a minor adjustment, if need, to get the exact angle you want.
