Hi,
I just picked up an old atlas Hand Crank bench grinder ($8 on Ebay.. didn’t think I could go too wrong. I would like clean this up a bit and use it to sharpen my plane and chisel blades by grinding with it and then honing with waterstones. However the wheel is very small – 3 1/2″. Will a diameter this small make my grind “too hollow”?
Also the wheel is pretty beat up, anyone out there know where i can find good source of small wheels? I took a look on-line did not fine anything.
Any info from anyone would be great,
Rob

Rob,
The wheel is almost certainly considerably worn down, the smallest machines I've seen had 5 or 6 inch wheels. Being hand cranked, the wheels don't have all that much surface speed even with a full size wheel so you should get a new wheel for efficiency.
I do almost all of my ordinary tool sharpening on a hand cranked grinder and the hollow grind left by a 5 to 6 inch wheel works very well. Get a star wheel wheel dressing tool to keep the surface of the wheel sharp, and use it often, otherwise you'll have problems.

John,
I took a pretty good look at the grinder before posting and it not appear that a larger wheel would fit. Looks like both the tool and bench mounting bracket will get in the way.
If in fact the wheel is in the 3-1/2 to 4" size would this still be ok?
I will take a closer 2nd look after reading what you wrote. It sounds likely that I missed somthing the first time..
Thanks about the advice regarding a dresser wasn't sure what kind to get and the the quick response to this and my other posts in the past.
Rob.
Can you post the E-bay number of the auction, I can use it to look at what you purchased.John W.
Sure John, the number is 180159478725. The photo wasn't too clear though...
Krenov used one that size and he seemed to get along just fine....
Thanks Napie.. Saved me a trip..... check out the book once but i did not remember the details about the wheel size...
Good enough for him.... good enough for me :-)
Get a copy of Krenov’s book “The Fine Art of Cabinetmaking”. He goes into the use of the hand cranked grinder quite a bit.
