Hi, I’m new to woodturning and can easily see how it can become an addiction ! !
I was recently fortunate to be able to divert a lorry load of green walnut blocks from
the log pile of a local hotel to my backyard. Have been rough-turning some of the
blocks into 8” high x 4” dia vases. but have found it difficult hollowing out the
end-grain 3”dia x 4” deep using Forstner bits. Is there a method of using a modified
spindle gouge to do this job ?

I use a 3/8 " spindle gouge on it's side flute facing you set the tool rest so the gouge is on the centre line and go straight in then pushing the handle away pivot the tip towards you enlarging the hole.I use a fingernail grind on the tool
