I built a home built phase converter from an article I found. http://www.metalwebnews.com/howto/ph-conv/ph-conv.html
I bought a DJ-20 jointer for $600 a couple of months back, but it had a 3 phase motor on it. I cobbled together an old 2HP 3PH motor and put a set of bearings in it and scraped together some old electrical parts for the control box and contactors, etc. Being an electrician by trade helped immensely in the quest for parts, I’ll admit. The only things I actually had to buy were 3 capacitors off of eBay for about $15.
I gave it the “smoke” test last weekend and it worked like a champ. I had an advantage in the parts department, but having acces to 3 phase power really opens up the possibiilities for getting some great deals on used equipment that others will pass up solely because of the 3 phase power requirements.
I used the capacitor values recommended for the 2HP idler motor and came out right on the money.

Mike, that's really interesting. However the link you posted is broken. Can you double check?
Thanks,

Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk, cut it with an ax.
