I have been exploring cost to set up furniture/cabinet business out of my home. I can obtain a business license without any problem ( James City County, VA.), however my homeowners insurer, State Farm, will not cover this type of business. Can anyone give me names of companies that will cover this type of business as a home occupation ? I am going to contact an independent insurance company, I hate to change as I have been with State Farm for 25+ years.

You might not be able to mix your homeowners and home business insurance in one. You might have to take out seperate policies, which is the case in some states. I wish I had the name of some companies, but unfortunately I don't know many business insurers. Have you googled it?

I am going to talk to an independent agent next week. I would bet that there are alot of at home businesses that never notify their insurer, and probably a lot that never considered having to do that. I will do some searching online tonight. Thanks.Robert
rpholland,
Although I am not an expert on insurance , I have been working from my home property for about 12 years now . What I learned was that some insurance companies will not cover your homeowners insurance if there is a business on the same property . As you were told not all companies offer coverage for wood shops . What I ended up doing was gave our whole package to one company and they outsourced for the carriers . We have several vehicles , homeowners insurance , contractors liability business coverage, and any others that they carried made it more of a package for them . Getting coverage on your own shop building and it's contents , now that is interesting to say the least , be prepared !
good luck dusty
Robert get the checkbook out. It'll cost a bunch more, and you'll never use it :)
Gotta have it though. I've had good luck with The Hartford, and Lloyds of London will still cover practically anything. Both have been good companies for me. I actually bet that if you comparison shop using an independant agent, you'll find that you can get a better rate then your current coverage. I think you need to periodically shop insurance companies, or at least agents, just to keep then honest.
Geeze I hate paying for insurance. Almost as bad as taxes.
Robert,
I've had problems with this too. Thanks for bringing it up.
So far, I found I can get liability coverage without any problem.
The Ins. Companies I've talked with say I can't have a woodworking business
inside my home. (detached is OK) The only way they will cover
me is if I insure the whole house as a business. If my woodworking is a hobby,
they have no problem with it. No $$ can change hands though.
A member of this site once wrote..I just build things out of wood
and give them to my wife.. What she does with them is her business.
