Good Morning !!!
A little different question. I had a deck attached to my house and over the years the flashing failed and cause a considerable amount of rot. I removed the deck, repaired the rot, and then resided the houe with ship lapped verticle siding (8″ rough cedar). I now want to attach the deck again but am not willing to cut into the cedar. Is there a “Proper” way of attaching the deck to the house by attaching the leger board over the siding? Putting stand-offs between the siding and the leger so that water can run down between?
Help!!!
David

This one is a stumper for me since I've never made anything larger than a desk. I'd have to defer your question to our good friends accross the hall at Fine Homebuilding magazine.
For a quick answer, go post on the Breaktime forum (click on the All Forums like above). For a not so quick answer, I'll mosey over to their offices and try and get an answer for you and post again later.

I just spoke with the editor of Fine Homebuilding and he recommend a few good articles on their site. Some of these require a membership to FHB.com)
This is the most recent one that he said is helpful for your question: http://www.taunton.com/finehomebuilding/how-to/articles/smart-deck-framing-strategies.aspx?ac=fp
Here's their collection on all things deck building: http://www.taunton.com/finehomebuilding/collections/deck-planning-guide.aspx
In short, the ledger board that gets bolted to the house must be flashed properly to avoid rot where that ledger board connects to the side of the house. There are old-school ways to attach and flash the ledger, as well as new fangled solutions. The deck joist then attach to that ledger board.

You state that you have removed the deck....
Not sure how your deck is constructed, is it possible to install additional posts near your house to support the deck thereby not attaching deck directly to house but maybe it is half inch away from house
He built his deck in 2008, but maybe it is rotting again by now.
The house might not even be there.
