When thru tenons or dovetail have small gaps, what is the best filler? I’ve tried yellow glue with wood dust from the wood used. Is there an easier option?

For really small gaps I try to plane across the endgrain to blow out fibers into the gaps. There is a name for it that escapes me.
When building a piece with that kind of joinery I have a dedicated cut offs box for each project where I save EVERYTHING until the piece is done. All of the waste from dovetails, all cutoffs, all slivers & slugs go in the box.
When I have a larger gap than I can blast-fill with a plane there is a guaranteed-to-match wedge somewhere in that box.
Maybe paintable wood filler. Elmer's makes a decent, inexpensive one.
