All,
The knifes in my recently purchased Powermatic 54a joiner need sharping, from all accounts it looks like this is not a DIY job (at least without the proper equipment) I brought the knifes to a local sharping shop. After receiving the resharpened knifes back, the edge looked like the edge I would put on one of my bench chisels with the cource stone I own.
My question is do you hone the knifes after having them professionally sharped? Do you hone both the bevel and back (as with a plane iron or chisel)? I you hone the edge how fine do you go?
Thanks for your help

On my jointer I will pass the back of the knife over one of my water stones to knock the burr off. I don't spend to much time in getting the blade to mirror finish like on my chisels and plane irons. Most machined surfaces need to be touched up with traditional methods to get the ultimate surface for finishing.

Most professional sharpeners will hone them after they take them off of their diamond grinder. Most will do it with 220, 320, then 400 grit sandpaper.
Maybe you need to change your sharpener.
I made a jig for sharpening my jointer blades. Basically a "T" made of wood. The top of the "T" is 6" wide and the bottom of the "T" has wooden wheels. The top of the "T" has a slot cut on the bottom for holding a blade at the proper angle. I put the blade in the slot then wedge it in with toothpicks so it's held sturdy. I then grind it with successive grits going down to 600 grit. Works fairly fast. It produces good straight edges.
Tried the same with my 12" planer blades, but the work involved went up exponentially! I send those out instead of trying to do it myself.
