Hi, and sorry that this is probably not the most relevant question for this forum but I’m struggling to find answers anywhere else.
We just aquired a used couch and the back of one of the sections is broken. I would like to try to fix this but I’m struggling to figure out how to get this upholstery off (it will need to go back on).
The sides of the upholstery are held on with big staples so those are easy. However I am not able to figure out how to pull the bottom up – it also appears to connect around the base of the whole couch. That leaves the top, which is fastened with small staples. I’m worried I will not be able to get these back in, and there isn’t going to be enough room for me to get a staple gun under there and put in new staples. What would you all do?
Thanks!
Pic 1 is of the bottom of the couch.
Pic 2 is the top (pulled out some small staples).

Listen, buddy, I fixed the same breakage with nails.
Those staples were put in when the whole panel of the couch was flapped forward. You'll need to figure out the order the panels were put on and reverse it back to your repair areas.
Not seeing it all, it's hard to say. But I'd think about using a big ledger-lok screw and bolting the break together, right through the upholstery. Make a little incision through the fabric first, and you can cover the screw head after. It will probably look better than trying to remove the fabric and put it back on after.
It's been over 100 years since sofas were meant to be reupholstered and used indefinitely. Since then, they are destined to fall apart. They don't have proper joinery any more, just screws and bolts.
