I am interested in learning how to put threads on a dowel. I have seen the inexpensive set at Woodcraft, but it seems fairly loose.
Any other sets or suggestions?
Thanks,

There was a thread (pun intended) last November that I contributed to that you might want to tap (again, pun intended) into.

I described how to do it with the tablesaw, and there were some other equally good ideas too.
I've been using clamps and vise screws made using those taiwan taps for many years. If you think they feel sloppy, it might be because someone used an undersized dowel (its a diameter problem, not a thread problem).
My threads aren't sloppy. What they are, however, is too fine, and the more expensive beall taps don't fix this problem. The smaller sizes aren't so bad, but the 1-1/2" 6tpi that I use for my vises really should be 1-1/2" or 2" 3tpi.

I also use the Beall threader kit and remain impressed with how easy it is and how well it works.
I have a review of it at the link below with photos of all the components and of using it.

Thanks everyone for your replys. I haven't used the Beall so maybe it is better than what I have used.
The one I have is a no-name brand from Woodcraft. Understanding that some dowels are undersized, I was relatively careful, but there still seemed to be too much play.
Maybe the Beall is a better or higher quality.

Hi there Alan I believe you have a lathe as you turn plane knobs. Try making your own chasers then chase the threads. That way you get the fit ,size and t.p.i that you want.
Sorry, I don't turn plane knobs. Not opposed to it. Just never done it.
