Hi All,
I’ve just purchased a new Grizzly 1023 SL cabinet saw, which I’m matching up with a JoinTech CabinetMakers system. In setting up the saw I’ve run into a few questionable areas where I need some advice :
1. I have the wings flat within .003″ over the 40″ width of the tabletop – is this flat enough, or should I continue to hassle with it and try to get the top flatter?
2. I have the blade aligned with the mitergauge slots within .004″ in 10″, both at 90 and at 45 degrees. Again the question is – is this adequate or do I need to continue working at it?
I guess my basic question is: how flat is flat? I realize that we are working with wood – not metal, and that tolerances are not quite the same! What kind of tolerances should I be striving for in setting up my new tools?

Bob,
I am a semi- professional woodworker, but a professional turbine mechanic and machinist. I'm sure I will have a few argue with me, but I think you've done just fine. This is coming from a guy who has a 2" travel indicator on his Performax 1632 and sands to + or - .002". Parallelism is important in a table saw, if for no other reason than to keep sawdust from kicking back in your face. You're doing fine in my opinion.
It's fine. Now you should go make something.
0.003" in 40"?
Your wood is going to move that much in the first few minutes after you get it off the saw. That is if you breathe in the room and change the humidity level. lol

.004 is very acceptable. Anything below that is kudo's to you.
Now, quit fine tuning that guitar and lets hear some concert music. ha..ha..

I cheat. My BIL is a machinist with Delta Air Lines. He will assist on those matters and I re-cipocate with wood matters for his needs. Most BIL are night-mare stories. I am fortunate to have one that will bend over backwards to assist.
Have a good evening and be sure to register all things that make BANG sounds. You know, hammers etc. ha..ha..
