I am making a reproduction of an 18th century Newport Tea Table. The edge of the table is serpentine and complex. I need to know how it was made. Was it an applied molding? Was it carved into the edge? How was it made?

The tabletop is traditionally turned and carved. Here's one article by Eugene Landon that describes the process. A modern day solution can use a router for some of the bulk wood removal.
