Hello: I have just installed my new pleated canister filter on my JDS Dust Force and suction seems to be great. One question did arise though: how long will this $200 filter last even with the paddle thingee inside to brush the accumulated dust off? I had not seen one up close before, it seems there is no way to replace the filter material, the whole thing needs to be replaced and that is pricey. Anyone have long term experience with life expectancy on these things?
Thanks, Duke

Duke,
I have a Jet DC with cannister filter, and I believe it is similar. I have used it for at least two years in a full time shop situation. It will load up with fine dust, causing the air flow to diminish. I try to knock most of the dust out of the filter with the paddles and by judiciously banging on the outside of the cannister. I do this before emptying the plastic bag. This seems to improve the overall air flow. I have also used compressed air on rare occasions to assist in removing the caked dust.
I am unaware of any mechanical degradation so far. The filter seems to be holding up. I agree that the replacement cost is high. I would like to see that issue addressed. Also, the rim seal between the cannister and the sheet metal housing is tricky. I frequently have to screw around with the fit to prevent dust leakage.
I hope this helps. Good luck, Tom.
Tom: Thanks; that should settle it for me. I am a hobbyist so I will never put the hours on mine that a pro shop would. Since the filter cartridge is heavier then the bag the seal problem you mentioned might be due to the blower mounting flexing. It has always seemed a bit unsteady.

I've used my canister filter for about two years now. I give the paddles a turn each day, and use compressed air to blow it out before I take of the bag. Twiceper year I take it off and give it a good cleaning with the air. I've seen no real difference over the years.
Ah! Good news, Thanks, DukeSupport the Troops, Support your Country
