I’m trying to restore a circa 1900 wardrobe, and in the process of taking out the panel glued with hide glue, the back of the groove on the stile broke away. Now I will have reglue it, but what can I put on the panel in the meantime to use it as a spacer, but not glue the panel onto/into the groove? Can panel be waxed or otherwise treated?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Don't use the panel because it will be too tight and it's probably beveled. Rip a scrap to fit widthwise and cover the edge and sides with clear packing tape. Leave it wide enought to get a good grip on it. A little wax for insurance wouldn't hurt either. I'd be tempted to use a micropinner to pull it into the stile.

Thanks. I'llgive it a try.
