If your using iron on , then an inexpensive cloths iron works well. If I'm not mistaken there is now also a pre- glued press on version on the market, although you probably won't be able to get it at your local big box home center. I've been using a good deal of the polyester or vinyl type edge banding that's usually applied with edgebanding machines. I've had good success applying it with Rue Glue( Melamine glue), only problem is application and finishing( waiting for glue to dry, trimming, filing etc ) is slow. Good way to apply if you don't have a lot to do. When I have a lot , I go to a local cabinet shop and use their edge banding machine or pay them to do it.
If you don't have an edgebander (plain or fancy) then there's no advantage at all in using 3mm banding as opposed to a solid edgeing. You need to glue the banding with Titebond or whatever you use for wood joints, so you might as well glue a full edge.
