Can anyone help me with instructions on how to apply tung oil to poplar? How many coats do I apply?

Are you using a tung oil finish or 100% tung oil. If the first, just follow the directions and go with three or four coats. This product is almost certainly a wiping varnish (thin varnish with some oil (maybe) added). You will get some slight build up.
Real tung oil takes a very long time to dry. I'd wait a week between coats and do five. This is not a very good finish. Polymerized tung oil is better, but very expensive. Boiled Linseed is a bit easier to use and dries faster as I recall.
Hope this helps.
*Scott,Thanks for the advice. It's 100% pure tug oil. Do I rub it in or just wipe or brush it on? Does it get darker with each coat?Bill F.
*Just flood the surface, let it sit for 20 minutes and wipe it off. check on it every hour for a few hours and then a few times each day. keep wiping it off. let it sit two or three days between coats at optimum temp and humidity. I'd leave it an extra day to be sure. It won't get darker with more coats. It will not offer much protection, but it looks nice. You might consider putting a coat on letting it cure and then putting a few thin coats of a wiping varnish, shellac, etc. They offe rmuch better protection and shouldn't obscure the tung oil much.
