I am building a coffee table with a 2ftX2ftX1in center. The marble rests on 0.75in cherry runners attached to the inside of the rails. The surrounding wood for the top is 3.5inX1in cherry. My problem is: How do I attach the marble to the wood so that it will not fall out if the table is turned upside down? I did not plan to have any support under the center of the marble. The marble weighs about 75 lbs or more. I am leaving tomorrow for 3 weeks but I will greatly appreciate any suggestions.

liquid nails or epoxy
Expert since 10 am.
I would not attach the marble directly and permanently to the frame of the table since it is easily stained and damaged and which will mean that you will want to replace it some day. Instead, glue some wood blocks or strips to the marble and then screw through the sides of the strips into the table frame. Epoxy or silicone will both work well to attach the strips.
Since tables rarely get accidentally flipped upside down, I would leave the stone loose and easy to remove, which is commonly done.

This sounds like a very good Idea. I don't know why I didn't think of it. It might be even better to attach the wood in slots like a table top. Thanks.
When I installed a marble vanity top, the supplier said to use silicone, not liquid nails. He said it is much easier to remove the marble with silicone, but it will hold it down fine.
I've made some small tables with corian center panels and just used double faced carpet tape to hold it in place. If I turn the tables upside down, the corian doesn't drop out but I can work the panels out if need be, although it does take some effort. I doubt it would have any problem holding the marble in place for the odd case where the table might tip over. Sounds a bit tacky (no pun intended) but it's not visible, so what da heck.
If you build it he will come.
