I really want the Porter-Cable pin nailer mentioned in the “Two Nailers You Need” (FWW #217), but that means buying a compressor, too.
A past thread (which I can’t find anymore) has convinced me that refurbished tools are the way to go, if they are warrantied.
Google Shopping listed a lot of refurbished tools sold by people/companies I’ve never heard of, many through Amazon. How do you find a tool that was reconditioned by an expert, not by a tinkerer who just cleans the outside and squirts in some WD-40? Who honors the warranty–the seller, or Porter-Cable?

refurbished or not
Suggest going to the Mfg. of your choice and asking about their Refurbished tools. They often offer distributors deals on selling overhauls. Mechanically, refurbished tools are generally better than line run tools. In that they get personalized attention.
Cosmetically, not perfect. but it saves you from cursing when you add another scar.
And some times you get lucky and get ahold of a returned New tool. Or an overstocked item that is returned to vendor that the Mfg. can't sell as new.
Good suggestion, thank you! Porter-Cable said their "authorized online dealers" sell factory reconditioned tools, and the company covers the warranty. Their website has links to the dealers.
