Here’s one for this group…My van blew a head gasket. Until I have the scratch for something else, I am having to get by with my ’98 Oldsmobile 88 as my work vehicle. Unfortunately, it has a fabric cover on top that covers the rain gutters and rules out typical roof racks.
Has anyone got a way to carry a load of seven 1x8x10 foot longs on the side of the car? It seems that I’ve seen that done somewhere. Or any other ideas? Thanks.

Remove the rear seat back. Other than some bracing, the trunk is open to the interior.
Drive the car to a friends house and borrow his pickup? - lol
Get some foam strips and two 1" nylon rachet straps. Put the foam strips on the roof add your lumber. Open the car doors and loop the radchet straps through the interior and tighten. Close the doors and drive. I keep this in my Honda accord all the time and have carried plywood, mattresses, desks and other furniture. Simple and low budget and fits in a small space in the trunk and is always ready to go. Your lumber would be a simple task to carry. Just keep the speed under 90 mph. All can be bought from Walmart or such for approx $20
What would keep the load from shifting side to side?
It nests in the foam and tension on the nylon rachet straps keeps it in place. Ever seen those foam pads to carry canoes and boats on the car roof? I've been doing it for years.
Thanks, Rick. In testing this out on the slick surface of my car roof, I hit on a way to make it work even better. I wrapped the strap once around the load, with the strap crossed on the top of the load. This just gives one more level of security. Now I CAN go 90!bob
At 90 mph, you only want to drive interstate highways. Stay off crooked roads. %]
By "Typical Roof Racks" do you mean the type that sits in the Rain Gutter?
There are a lot of racks around for gutterless cars. The problem might be that they could foul on the gutter - my car is parked too far away for me to go and check.
Try http://www.thule.com and see whether you can find something that could fit - not necessarily the specific one for your car.
Nah dude nah this is what ya need.

Put the planks on the roof. And by the time you get there you will have turned a tidy profit as well.
Cars are dinosaurs. Old school.
Though you might want to put your client on "Island time ".

Roc,
Two things. No, three.
1) Your home e-mailbox is full. Full, dude.
2) I have a patent on that rocket.
3) Is that Queenmotherbunnytraineretcetcetc? About to launch a rocket at a passing barge?

DO NOT stretch the lumber from the trunk to the dashboard and rest the lumber on the dash. If you have to brake quickly, the lumber could move forward and break your windshield - don't ask how I know this.
Consider having it delivered. There's no point in ruining a vehicle that isn't meant for hauling - don't ask how I know that either.
Thanks to you all. RickL's method worked perfectly. Going 90 wasn't a problem at all. Stopping, however, was another matter. Don't ask how I know!Bob K
Next time someone whines about FWW being too basic, and not covering advanced topics, I'm going to point out this thread.
You consider this an advanced topic?
That's pretty funny...But it does make my point. :)
I would consider this a beginner topic. Not even intermediate!
I'm not sure what your point was I guess.
This method of strapping things to the roof of a car is low budget, low tech, simple and reliable. Common sense should say no sudden stops.
Load the van, pull the van with the car. What else you wanna know.

LOL!But again, no fast stops!
Try this:
Pretty good one, I'm wondering if the photo is real. Seems rigged to me.
