Peter,
Can you suggest a way to fill in tear out on curly maple? I am in the final sanding stage of my project and have a few panels with small tear out. I would like to fill them in to produce a smooth surface prior to applying the finish. I will be using transtint dyes followed by Target coating’s linseed oil and water based lacquer. My concern is having the filled tear out take the stain and oil so it does not show.
Regards,
Raul

Raul,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. After you color the wood, apply a thin coat of sealer (washcoat) . You can then fill the tear out with some cyanoacrylic glue. Use it sparingly so you minimize the sanding. If you do cut through your color at all use a small artist brush to dab some of your dye to the lightened area. The glue will dry transparent.

My mentor uses resin glues with sawdust & dye mixed in to match the finished product's stain. You can achieve extraordinarily close matche.
