How to do table edge banding purfling/binding
Hi – I am in the middle of building a federal card table based on an old set of plans. (Portsmouth Card table – American Woodworker).
The table top has what appears to be vertical grained banding that goes along the edge and also what looks like a light string that resembles binding on an acoustic guitar.
I have some ideas on how i would cut and attach the vertical grained veneer using veneer tape and maybe a backing for the banding, but am less sure about a good way to cut the channel for the stringing.
I saw this tool and it doesn’t look all that different from a marking gauge.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has done this and how they did it if they did not use a router (I don’t want to use one)

Hit youtube and search "guitar purfling by hand" (or binding) You'll find a ton.
I use a small router with a guide bearing. Using the cutting gauge first is a good idea to reduce tearout.
