I have been in the construction industry for over 20 years some in the field and some in management. I am starting a new phase of my life and would like to learn the finer side, finish work, furniture, moulding ect. I am self taught to this point and frankly I am tired of teaching myself, it has a very steep learning curve. I have looked for schools in my area ,Upstate NY) and have been unable to find one. Can you recommend ways that I might get started? Thanks, TSD

I am far from an expert but I did get a good start from The Heartwood School in western Massachusetts. They mostly have courses on timber frame construction, but offer several courses on woodworking and furniture making. You will get the basics that will allow you to equip and safely use all the stationary machinery in a woodworking shop (table saw, jointer, planer and router). I would recommend them.
There are several good schools around. Take a look at Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine. There is also a school in Hartford and the name escapes me right now. In any event, do a search on school on the FWW site. They did an article and have a listing of several. Google the internet for woodworking schools and see what floats your boat. Good luck.
