i just made some shaker candle boxes. then i began expermenting with shrinking the design to begin using scraps and cut-offs. now i have to figure out how to hinge the top of a small box made with 1/8 th inch thick top and sides. any ideas would be appreciated.
thanks, greg

Greg, 1/8th is slim- consider using leather straps which you glue on as easy option. Another option would be steel rod in housing -you would have to build up some local thickness to accommodate. Then there are those sheet metal hinges which have tabs which one presses in-they require soft wood.Depends on how refined you want to get....
thanks philip, i thought of the leather and it's still a viable idea. i may try to look into the push on hinges somewhere too.
thanks again,
greg
Back in the old days, Ha that seems funny to be writing those words. I made some small boxes that I inset the lid on 3 sides, but on the front side, it was on top. For a hinge, I would drill a small hole near the back edge of the top through the sides and into the edge of the lid. I would just use a brad through the sides into the top for a pin for the lid to pivot on.
If you don't follow that, let me know, and I will send you a photo.
i do follow that and it's an idea that i hadn't thought of, but i like it. my design called for something different, but i might be able to modify it to make it work.
thank you for your input.

Neat idea!
A bad day woodworking is better than a good day working -- yes, I'm retired!
Use any of the hinging methods used in R/C model aircraft.

i don't know what those methods are, but i would like to know.
There are many & quite varied methods of hinging the rudder/elevator/ailerons/flaps/etc., from slitting the edge (many special tools including micro-routing a groove) to accept any of many types of model A/C hinges, figure 8 sewing, fiberglass cloth hinges, pin type hinges that glue into a small hole of both surfaces, a thin & flexible piece of nylon sheet, mylar, etc., etc. There are many modeling books available that will show these & more. Amazon or any good hobby store should have these. You might even find a web site by Googling. And there are many model R/C magazines.
Go to http://www.glasscrafters.com I also work with stained glass. code product #702 is a brass tube hinge. I use this set-up when making glass jewelery boxes. They get soldered on in those cases but you can probably glue or epoxy them on. Get into the hardware section they have several types of REALLY TINY hinges which may be of interest to you. Good luck.

What about lining the inside of the lid - all four sides - with a piece of veneer so that this projects from the body by about 1/8" all around. You can then just fit the lid to the body.

thanks guys i'll think about all the possibilities and figure out one that seems to fit for the projects. heck maybe i'll even try several.
much appreciated,
greg
