So, I told my friend I’d make her an oval frame.
A large one, 2′ x 3′
Now, I have to figure out HOW to do that!
My guess is you make an equilateral pentagon or hexagon with some type of butt joint, and then use a jig to layout the oval shape within those pieces, then route / jigsaw / bandsaw it out…
Am I even close?!

I think you are on the right track, but to minimize waste, the original glue-up would be closer to the shape of the ellipse, with the glue joints varying in angle. Doing a full-size drawing to figure out those angles would be essential, I'd think.
Also, rather than a pure butt joint, you might want to spline them.
