I am interested in making a level like one I saw on ebay (see attachment). Does anyone know of any resources or publications on making wooden levels.

that sure is a pretty level.
Ain't seen any publications on making yer own, but it's only a piece of wood,
fitted with brass here and there
fitted with a vial or two......Before I made my own, I might be inclined to salvage from some older levels....
rubbed up real good.
Sounds simple eh?
An intriguing project....
Thanks for pointing it out.

For the most part I agree with you that it ought to be simple. The main thing I'm unsure of is how to bed the vials.
There are a few ways to bed a vial, the simplest is to set them into Plaster of Paris and adjust them before the plaster sets. If you drill the holes for the vials accurately, the hole diameter only has to be slightly larger than the diameter of the vial and the plaster won't be seen.

ibid on the plaster of paris stuff for bedding vials.

You might look at Don Rosebrook's book on levels and level patents. It's on sale at Astrigal Press and a bargain at that price.
