My mom would like to have her kitchen cabinets refinished. They are solid wood fronts, plywood doors and cabinets. They are from 1966. The finish is a stain like the color of an almond. It is worn to the wood around the pulls and has some nicks. The people we spoke to either chemicaly strip the doors and frames or sand the finish off. Both suggested restaining and applying a clear finish. One suggested polyurethane, the other a clear varnish or laquior finish. Do you have any suggestions on these methods of refinishing and stripping? Will the chemical stripper cause the plywood doors to delaminate? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks Geoffrey

Your kitchen cabinets appear to be like the cabinets I had in my house that I just sold. With plywood doors, I would not invest much time in refinishing them. I wanted mine to look better before I sold my house so here is what I did: First, I clean them with mineral spirits, especially around the handles, lots of "ooky" stuff accumalates there. Next and last, I used brown shoe polish (Kiwi) to create an even color on the doors with multi-coats around the handles (knobs). They looked great! Hope this saves you lots of time.
