Looking for some advice on how to best repair latent splits that have shown up on peninsula face frames. I am guessing all that can be done on split near corner is to fill it. How do that and keep material inside split? No way to draw together.
The other I could put screw or screws thru side of face frame to prevent further splitting.
Any help would be much appreciated

2 things.
1 - look to see if if you can tel if there is a water source that is leaking and causing the wood to alternatively swell and shrink. If so, fix that first.
2- splits like you show in the picture are dreadfully hard to undo. I would not try to pull the split back together in that location. Instead, I would fill the split with water-based wood putty. I would use a thin consistansy (sp?) so that i could force it well into the crack. Before it completely drys, I'd tool it with whatever fits to minimize any followup sanding.

How to repair finished face frame splits
Mike:
Thanks for the reply, there is no water source of any kind, always dry. I will give a go with water based putty.
Do you think adding a screw might help stop further migration of the crack?
Hi Jeff, You might want to try some 5 min epoxy. Some Transtint in the glue might be helpful in order to get a close match of your stained finish.
Tape off the areas on each side and then apply and sand. Remove tape and touch up area with finish.

Dave
What may have caused the splitting? If the wood wasn't dry, I'd expect splits elsewhere as well. If there is drying air current and the current can be redirected, the split may close. Was the wood finished on all surfaces? How old is the peninsula? Theories as to the cause?
May want to wait on making repairs if more splitting likely.
