She who must be obeyed has tired of her healthy, pasty look. She also doesn’t want the quack snipping bits of skin as he has with me, So, I did some research on spray tanning, and found that HVLP is common in the industry. I have an Accuspray setup, and they sell to the spray tanning industry. I talked to Accuspray, and they told me to get their #4 air cap, .021” nozzle and needle. I bought a liter of Norvell Amber Sun Cocoa solution, rigged up, and now have a happy, tan spouse.

I checked around my area, spray tans are about $45 per application, but one can buy packages to get the price down to about $30. My costs were $170 (one time) for equipment I didn’t have, and $35 for solution that will do 10 to 15 applications. The tan lasts about a week, so I’ll be dollars ahead by the end of the summer.

Don't get your processes confused in this application. Remember - no pore filler or sanding prior to spraying. But rubbing out by hand, afterward, may be ok. Rich
"But rubbing out by hand, afterward, may be ok."Wouldn't that result in tanned hands? :)

One always waits for the finish to dry before rubbing out. However, no sacrifice is too great in the pursuit of the completed task.
There's a barrier cream to apply to palms, soles, nails, and joints. Do those terms sound familiar? Well, I was thinking I'd buy a set of good firmer chisels. If SWMBO sees the invoice, I'd tell her they're attachments to give a firmer, chiseled look with the spray tan. There are exfoliant scrubs the tannee can use. Not much different than a scrub plane with a dead-flat sole. And mortising chisels attachments for better looking knee and elbow joints. Palm sanders .... Can you see where this is headed?
The first neighbor woman to see the new tan wants one, too. I can hardly wait for her book club and bunko groups to weigh in! I have been working on a price list, to help recoup costs--any advice is appreciated. Here's what I have so far:
Ladies Tanning Prices

One Horizontal Tan Line<!----><!---->

(Making tan lines is a lot of extra work.)
I haven't worked out particulars on rubbed finishes. With a neighborhood full of husbands, and a shop full of new chisels, I wouldn't want things to cut the wrong way!
Re: Ladies Tanning PricesDon't forget group rates [sort of a "tannage a trois"] and age-scaled pricing.

(;>) At my age, everyone looks young. But I think your "tannage a trois" is extremely punny!
I'm trying to teach SWMBO to spray. When she can lay an even tan coat on me, I'll try to promote her to wood finishing.
I really like this thread. I think I may have found an enjoyable way to supplement my income!

Can you add UV inhibitors to the mix ? ;-)

"Can you add UV inhibitors to the mix ? ;-)"What does UV stand for, Uninvited Voyeurs? :)

I guess that also puts a new twist to the meaning of HVLP spraying.Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

Hey, Bruce,
The wink is telling me I'm missing something, but as a serious answer, there is no SPF (sunshine protection factor) in the tanning solution, and I suspect there may be no additives to give the solution an SPF as I haven't seen any advertised. So, no UV inhibitors, but like some wood, the skin will continue to darken if left out in the sun, and then will redden after that. Blistering and peeling of the veneer is also likely if left in the sun too long.
Your new business needs a slogan:
"Bob's Quality Tanning-We wood never rub you the wrong way!"
I like the motto, but I don't currently see this as a business. As you're aware, the thinking that "Almost every house has six or eight chairs, and if I buy the wood for $10 and sell a chair for $50 ..." typically leads to disaster.
Now, if I could convince the Chinese government to give me an exclusive in China, and I could convince 20% of their citizens to get a spray tan.... Once I got things going in China, I'd import the tans to the US, underselling everyone else. Then I'd probably move to India where the tans could be produced cheaper still. I'd have the backing of the World Tan Organization (WTO). The US, Canada, and Mexico would form an alliance (Not A Friendly Tanning Alliance) and soon there would be turmoil regarding tans. Young people would be angry that the old ones had all the tans. They'd want to grow their own, saying "it's natural." I'd have problems in the Middle East, which has the largest holdings of natural tans, and which could upset the economy if they formed a group Original Pigmented Eastern Cultures and tried to control the world market for tans. The US would elect George Hamilton president based on his strong tanning ethic (although his soon to be Vice President would call it voodoo tanning). The Sunshine Union would remove their barriers around East Burnin so the people would have freedom of sprayer, or whatever, leading to further darkening on the tanning scene. The US would have to install a strong tan in the ME tanning region, who would probably turn against us, and use our chemicals to threaten us with White-Medium-Dark solutions of his own. We'd end up hiring people that don't tan, they use black water, to try to help us straighten out the problems, leading to the sunburning of hundreds of thousands of people.
No, I think I'll stick close to home for now, and leave the tan business to others. Of course, though, if I could get the trigonometricians to exclusively sine my tan, then I might have a go at world domination--but they'd probably cosine with someone else, leading to a declining arc of events.
Bob,
Egad, man, I just can't follow your meaning. You're intangible.

Blistering and peeling veneer is often repairable with Hide glue, isn't it ? ;-)Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!
Bruce S.
Yeah, but on say, Paris H, would one use hot hide glue, or retarded hide glue? And would you roll or hammer the veneer? Would one nail in discreet places? Some people are so tacky already, how would you know how much to apply?
Perhaps the problems would be fewer if they remembered to keep out of the sun:
Hide Veneer: Less Peeling
Got liability insurance on this venture?
Politics is the antithesis of problem solving.
No Ma'am,
There is no venture. I'm trying to keep my spouse out of the sun (for tanning), and take advantage of equipment available in my shop. I thought there might be other woodworkers with HVLP equipment and with spouses that like to look tan, and was letting folks know what I found out.
Regarding insurance, I used to be self-employed, programming custom software, and carried a $Million liability insurance. Working in modern America without insurance is hanging it all out.
The balance of this thread has been a punning riff on fantasy.
