Hope this doesnt sound too dumb, but I cant seem to find an answer.
I have a hvlp accuspray conversion gun that I have set per the instructions and have had good results with it.
It sprays very similarly to other air guns and puts out a fair amount of finish, and as such needs a fair amount of masking for overspray etc.
My question is this: I have seen one demo and another on tv showing a turbine hvlp, which is barely dribbling out paint. It is very low pressure and takes quite a while to paint. Since it is so little coming out, very little masking is needed and it could easily be used to paint a installed door etc.
Should my conversion gun act like the turbine or more like a conventional gun? Im not sure if I am setting it right even though I get good results. I would like to cut down masking if possible and want to learn to do this right in any case.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
thanks,
Stevo

Stevo,
I'm not nearly as experienced as many who frequent this site, but I'll throw in my two-bits for what it's worth. I have a Fuji HVLP turbine set-up, which although not a conversion gun, is likely quite similiar to yours in performance. I simply turn down the air volume entering the gun, set my airhorn so it's spraying a circular pattern, adjust my gun so it's shooting a very focussed area (I can go down to less than 1/2"), then turn down the amount of fluid coming out, so my atomization is just right. The amount of control I can achieve is quite impressive... but I still find that I usually have to either mask a small amount, or use a piece of cardboard laid over the area I don't want to hit.
You may also want to touch base with Accuspray to see what they'd recommend.
Hope this helps you out a bit.

You like your results and it seems to go quicker than what you've seen on TV. Why argue with success?
AccuSpray is a top notch piece of equipment, btw. They've got a pressure-feed HVLP gravity gun that I lust for but can't really afford to buy. I use one of their older pressure-feed HVLP cup guns at work and for certain tasks it is the only gun in my arsenal that I reach for.
For what it's worth... I make my living with mostly HVLP conversion guns and I've squirted some clear out of a buddy's turbine unit once. Honestly, I gotta say that I've never used another "conversion" HVLP gun that sprays as similarly to the turbine type as that Accuspray does. Granted that I have very little experience with turbine types. But that Accuspray definitely doesn't spray like any other non-turbine gun I've ever used, and I've used many.
