My wife bought me a HVLP spray gun for an Xmas present and I have not idea how to use it. I would like to learn. It is just the gun and a one quate can for the paint. I have a pan cake compresser and hose. Is there any problem, what do I need to look out for? i was thinking of trying it out on a fence that needs to be stained. Help!

You are going to have a problem with air supply. You need a larger tank. Try this site:

Dan,
Whether you will need a new compressor or not largely depends on the gun and the size of the projects you intend to spray. Most guns are rated for continuos spraying and most woodworkers don't ever spray for more than a few minutes at a time.
Try your compressor out and if it can't keep up with the pace you want to set then look into a new one.

The instruction book with the gun should tell you the size compressor CFM/PSI that the gun needs to do its job. Your compressor should likewise have the CFM/PSI info that it can produce. You can probably search up a bunch of info on this site and others re the gun you have.
I purchased an HVLP a while back, and just sprayed plain water on the patio cement to practice laying a smooth pattern, and to get the spray motion and on/off timing. A similar exercise might give an indication whether your compressor can keep up. I suspect, though, that your wife has provided you with a gift that may keep giving--I see a new compressor in your life--or, at least, one from the rental yard.
Good luck.
It would not be the first time. What was the kids story about giving a mouse a cookie....Dan Carroll
