I started a post several weeks ago asking folks what they thought about hybrid table saws (I was considering buying one). Thought I’d follow back up with my own review, for those who are interested in the topic. I ordered the 10″ left tilt Delta hybrid cabinet saw on Amazon.com and it came in a couple of weeks ago. It required no adjustments right out of the crate. We’re doing a major addition to our home and I’m doing the cabinet work. The saw hasn’t missed a beat. It hit the mark for those of us needing more accuracy and a little more power than a contractor saw but don’t need all that comes with a 3hp, 220v Unisaw. If you’re thinking about one, I’d recommend it . . . . OA

That's good to hear OA. Congrats and thanks for the update.
My pleasure. Take care . . . . OA
Ozark..... I've had mine (2) years now & am happy w/ it. Had one little problem while it was still under warranty, Delta sent (2) guys to my house to fix it, no problem!
James
Glad to hear you're please w/yours. I'm looking forward to many years of good experiences and who knows, an heirloom from the saw every now and then . . . OA
I read recent review in FW about hybrid table saws. The Woodtek won on both capability and price. It's hard to believe that one could get that much value for that price. I can't find any REAL user reviews, only the article review. Does anyone have an opinion based on real knowledge about the Woodtek Hybrid table saw recently reviewed in FW (arrived 2-19-2008)? I'm not knocking the magazine's reviewer, but I figure one gets roughly what one pays for, so I'm skeptical. Thanks.
Hi arvee - I've never seen a Woodtek hybrid either, nor have I read any feedback from an owner. I tend not to give any tool review too much weight, because it really boils down the preference of a reviewer or team of reviewers. Their priorities and perceptions of performance may differ from yours. There are also many variables in play. Most of the saws at this level are capable of excellent performance with good setup and blade selection, so don't be afraid to go with the one you like best. With that said, the GI 50-220, Craftex (Canada) and Sunhill Machinery hybrids appear to come from the same factory in Taiwan. That doesn't make them identical, but I'll hazard a guess that the guts are the same....it's likely that the primary differences are things like fence, miter gauge, motor, switch, retail situation, and warranty. If you can get a glimpse or feedback on one of those saws, it may offer some useful insights.
Thanks for the reply. I'll look into those other two that you mentioned to see if there ia anything "out there" on them.
Dear OzarkAngler,
Thanks for the rundown of your new hybrid saw. Can I suggest that you also post a review in the Tool Guide on FineWoodworking.Com. Who knows? You might be the first.
David
Before you post that review, I'd like to ask a favor, a specific test, something that will tell us how much better it is than a contractor saw. Would you tilt the blade to 45° and check to see if the blade stays parallel to the miter slot. Thanks! Looking forward to the results.
Not to step in outa turn but I did that test a while back & my Delta Hybrid stayed exactly the same at 45 deg. as at 90.
James
Not stepping out of turn at all, James. The more data points, the better!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Jammie: Thanks, thats what we're here for, right? And of course to have some lite hearted moments too? I learn a lot here, so try to pass on what I can if it helps.

Understood -- how are you to keep track of all of us Jam(m)ies?! forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
forestgirl,
I bet he likes peanut butter and strawberry jammies!

I always thought "Jammies" were what you put on before going to bed...
I also wear sockies to keep my toesies warm!
[Apologies to the OP -- what has this thread come to?!]
To be sure, I'm overly sensitive about the spelling of my "Jamie" name.....I was the only girl in the world (it seemed) with that name in my elementary school days. People would either spell it wrong (Jaime) or put me on the boys' home room list. Poor me!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
"Would you tilt the blade to 45° and check to see if the blade stays parallel to the miter slot."FG, I have that same Delta Hybrid, purchased last August. Using a micrometer I measured distance from miter slot to one particular sawtooth at table height with blade fully raised and tooth at front and then rotated to back. Distances front and back were equal both at 90° and 45° to within ±1/256".BruceT
OA (and JamesS, plus anyone else with the Delta hybrid)
Which fence did you get with your saw?
When I looked at the Delta hybrid at Rockler yesterday, the store manager told me that Delta's T 2 fence is just as good as the Biesemeyer. The T 2 costs quite a bit less. I've been figuring I'd get a Biesemeyer, regardless of what I get for a saw.
I'd be interested to know what those with experience think.
Thanks,
oldfred
Is that kind of like a Korean car manufacturer claiming that their $18K sedan is just as good as a $45K Mercedes?! ;-)
I do think the T2 is a fine fence for the money, but it's really not as ruggedly built as the Biese. It's "good nuff" though. I love my Biese, but if I were searching for an aftermarket fence with aftertax dollars, I'd be hardpressed to justify spending $350 on the Biese vs $150 on the T2, but I'm not likely to be heard saying it's "just as good as the Biese" anytime soon.
Knotscott,
Yep, could be right about the car comparison. Sales is sales. :) But Rockler sells both fences for that saw, and I would think they'd stand to make more by selling me the Besie. Who knows.... From my past dealings, I give this particular manager a lot of credibility.
I'm not planning to use the saw commercially. Maybe for my purposes the T 2 would be "just as good". I've talked myself "down" from the unisaw to the hybrid. Of course the hybrid is quite a ways up from either of my two current saws.
Thanks for your answer
oldfred
I bought my Delta hybrid with the T2 fence instead of Bies primarily because of space considerations; small shop and saw has to stow away next to the wall when not in use. Biesemeier 30" rails extend something like 5" farther to the right than T2, so it wouldn't have fit the available space.Biesemeier is also longer and slightly stiffer against deflection than T2, but I won't be ripping sheets of plywood, so side thrust is not a great concern for me.
BruceT
Thanks, Bruce,
Don't think I'd need the longer length either. Guess I'd like to see them both and check for deflection, though. Probably negligible for what I'd be doing. I prefer cutting large sheet goods with a straight edge and circ saw.
oldfred
Oldfred (with the discounts) I got the T-2 with my hybrid & am well satisfied w/ it.

Hey James,
Thanks!
Palm Harbor? Just talked with friends in St. Pete this evening. 80 degrees - they were out in the yard cooking steaks. I'm looking out at a snow drift the plow just left for me to clear out tomorrow morning.
oldfred (Discounts are good!)
Oldfred Your looking at snow drifts & we have the A/C on.
James
oldfred,
I have the homeshop version of the Bies and couldn't be happier. The Board Buddies can't lift the fence when ripping. Rock solid.
I too cooked steaks outside on the deck today. But, it wasn't 80° and I had to shovel the snow off the deck first! :-) Driveway is gettin mighty tight.............

That reminds me of when I lived in Michigan. I remember the driveway getting narrower and narrower... :)As far as the fence is concerned, I have the GI 50-220 with the Biesemeyer clone and it is wonderful. Very sturdy and even thought the saw is made overseas the fence is made in Canada.Josh
Hey Bob!How did the snow drift steaks turn out? Would have been slush steaks down here near the coast. Snowblowing the drives at forty degrees. One hour snowblowing , two hours clearing the chute.I'm missing a mental connection tonight - what's a "homeshop" version of the Biesemeyer?oldfred
Here's one on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/hi/B00002261K/104-0158294-7403942
Couldn't find a price but I paid $240 for mine about 3 years ago.

OK, got it.
thanks,
oldfred
Sorry about the late reply. I got the Biesemeyer but didn't compare others so really can't comment other than to say this fence is as accurate as advertised. I really like the hybrid saw and bet you will too . . . . OA
OA,
Your reply isn't late for me. I haven't built my new shop yet so there's plenty of time. I've yet to hear a negative word about the Biesemeyer. Nice to see a product that gets such approval. Thanks,
oldfred
