I guess I don't understand
I guess I don't understand what you are saying here, are you saying that because of a few changes you are leaving? or that you have a paid subscription and that is somehow worth less because you do not like the free forum application attached to FWW which has little to nothing to do with a paid subscription? or are you saying something completely different?
please elaborate.
Will, it is frustrating isn't
Will, it is frustrating isn't it? I can only suggest that you hang in there another couple of weeks. They launched this new platform right up against the holidays, and I've gotta believe that timing has made it difficult to get changes made very quickly. I'm with ya on the limitations of posting pictures and attachments. It sucks!!!
I don't know, but on the
I don't know, but on the Cooks Talk forum the pictures are posted as a slide show, which is an improvement over the old way (I guess). Post a question to the forum person handling the changeover. Everyone on CT is saying it so much better (the picture part ONLY!!).
Gretchen,
The photo aspects from within your own platform, both here and in CT is only relevant to original posts, not replies. The slide show aspect is available on both but in neither can one post a single picture in a reply without going to an external server such as Photobucket or their own website.
This may be a source of Will's frustration. There are many who don't want all their photos residing out in never land, and thus can not post images in replies.
BB
WillG,
You must sip a grog, regain calm and consider an alternative strategy for picture posting. Please see my posts in the "Signing Your Work" thread within the "General Discussion" group.
Here you will find talk about using Photobucket, a free picture-hosting website that is very useful for storing, organising, resizing and referencing pictures for web forums such as Knots.
Using Photobucket is, I suggest, a much better way to post pictures to any and all forums (as well as blogs, web-email services and otheer such web sites).
Once you've used it I think you may agree that it's far better than both the old Knots "make attachment" facility AND the new slideshow-on-1st-post-only service of the new Knots.

Lataxe:
That's a good idea; but, maybe a quick step-by-step guide on how to use photobucket to get a series of photos added to a post. I'm not familiar with the process and maybe it will encourage Will.
I see little point in criticizing the forum. Taunton's are hardly likely to go back to the old so we will just have to adjust. It's not as bad as I thought it would be.
H
H & Will,
The photobucket site is here:
http://photobucket.com/
The sitemap
http://photobucket.com/sitemap
contains various links to information about how to set up an account, how to upload photos and how to manage/edit them, including info about how to share them or keep them private. There is also info about how to link to them from other places on the web such as Knots.
Frankly, their information explains things a lot better than I could.
The basic account is free but there is the option of having a "professional" account for a few dollars a year. Most lads won't need this as its for more and bigger photos, etc..
Personally I like to edit and resize photos on my PC before uploading the smaller files that result to Photobucket. This makes the upload a lot faster. Another option, if one does not have a photo-editor on one's own computer, is to upload your photos "as-is" to Photobucket then use their editing and resizing tools to make the photos fit to appear in Knots or other websites that want smaller photos.
Even when the old Knots offered the "upload attachments" facility, I came to prefer Photobucket. It's a lot easier to organise and reuse photos in there. Also, they appear integrated with the text when embedded in a post - no need to click open each one or even to seperately open a slideshow (as in the new site). And one can post a big/high res photo if one needs to on rare occasions.

Lataxe, having a bright idea.
Squire,
Wotabout my numerous piktures secreted in neat piles in my Picasa-must I transfer them all into cyber space?? Surely not.....
Philip,
Is not Pickaxe-0 already in cyberspace? If it is a photo-server (stores and makes available your pics to other web connectees) then it probably has a means to detect, copy and paste the html tags that identify the url of Pickaxo itself and your photos therein.
I nivver used that phacility myself but there may be another fellow who has.....?
As I understand it, any picture (like any other file - webpage, movie, etc.) available on a website anywhere can be linked to in our posts. We used to be able to do it simply by copy/paste of the thing itself on the screen but now we have to dig up it's html tag for the new Knots, as it is a bit wet ahind the ears just yet - a squalling preteen of a forum.
Lataxe
Sir Philip,
'Round these
Sir Philip,
'Round these parts, a Pee Casa is the little bio-relief building out back. ;-)
If Picasa allows what are called "external references" - that is, links to specific images from other Web sites, you should be able to use the same HTML tags to refer to the URLs of the images. Some image sites block external references, however, as they want viewers to see their advertising and they don't want to be nailed for the extra bandwidth usage. To test this, once you have the full-sized image up in a browser window or tab, you should be able to see its properties, the URL, and copy/paste that into the HTML tag within an edit window here. Note that the image URL should end in ".jpg" or one of the other image formats commonly known by browsers.
HTML "tags" are key words enclosed by angle brackets ( ). To display an image, it would look like:
but without the spaces behind and befor the angle brackets.
Hello Lataxe,
While you and others may find it easier to put photos in another location, then access them as you wish, it seems like going around your elbow to get to your thumb, if said photos are already inside one's box. Mind you, I'm stuck here in neanderthal puter-land, where such moves do not take place at the mere click of a button, but involve...a...sig..nifi...cant... wait.. for... every...step. As much as I agree with you and others who have pointed out that it is nonproductive to bemoan the loss of the good old days, still that does not alter the reality of the new forum, does it? The part that I find mildly irritating, is that new replies are imbedded within the thread, as to what the repliy is replying to, so that in a long thread, one must tediously scroll thru the whole thing, carefully looking for that tiny red "new" at the top of the new post. Additionally, all the backing out of a page, and into the old, then opening a new one for each thread viewed, becomes, for a slow hookup, exceeding tedious.
Not suggesting that anything be done by the powers that be, just stating the way things are for me. I'm dealing.
Ray
Hi, Ray --
I agree, the organization of the threads leaves much to be desired.
I'd be delighted if they could manage to add back the "Msg XYZ in reply to JKH" thing. Time-sequenced posting is supposedly in the works, but a "new posts" that pulled up everything unread in a thread would be nice.
Going to wait it out and see what shakes out of the tree, but I've also gone into the Breaktime Classic forum.
You get enough snow there? Was up your way (over in Fulks Run, west of Broadway) this weekend and it was warmer there than Roanoke. Not that it'd be worth a stamp to write home about.
Have a happy new year!
Hi leon,
The snow is about gone, tho it's been slow in going away. This has been as good snowstorm and then a cold snap, for this early in the winter, as I recall in several yrs.
Fulks Run, huh? You got friends or kinfolk there, or a hunting camp? I assume you availed yourself of some Turner ham while you were in the neighborhood, and maybe a side trip to Neff's Lumber mill. Stop in the next time you come thru, I'm just a couple miles off the interstate.
Ray
Have any of you lost your avatar? Mine shows up in posts to other parts of the community but not here.
Will:
As Lataxe has said read the thread Chris started on Signing Your Work they talk about posting pictures using photobucket.
OK I'm going to try to post more than one picture to this post. I'm in no way a pro at this so if anyone sees an easier way please post.
1. Open an account with Photobucket.
2. Download pictures from your computer to the Photobucket site.
3. You have to have Knots open in one window and Photobucket open in another tab.
4. When replying to a post at FWW Knots, anywhere through the post go back to the Photobucket site and let your pointer thingy hover over the picture you want to download, it will then give you four options on making links to that picture, for the Knots site you must click on the HTML Code, then to the right of the words HTML Code the box will light up right click and copy.
5. Then return to your comment box at Knots and paste the picture.View Image
6.You will see a bunch of letters and words that won't make much sense, don't worry they will be the picture you want once you post the reply, I guess here it would be Save.
7.To post another picture just follow the same steps.
View Image
8.And here is another.View Image
9.You can then click on preview before you post to make sure all is well.
I hope this helps Will, please hang in there it will get easier with time.
Mike
Will, as Jamie (FG) said, the Taunton tech staff will be working on a boat-load of things in the coming weeks. The Christmas and New Year holiday work schedule has certainly gotten in the way of fixing bugs and making improvements to the new software. My guess is that they will expand the photo-upload feature present for initial posts to replies, as well.
Direct photo uploads to a forum is actually somewhat rare across the Internet, since it adds a significant storage and bandwidth burden to a site - especially if the photos aren't optimized (re-sized and compressed) appropriately for Web viewing. I'm guessing that is one of the contributing factors to the Mzinga service becoming prohibitively expensive, which prompted the forum software and hosting change.
As suggested, the interim work-around is to host photos on one of the many "free" image-hosting sites (e.g. Photo Bucket), and use HTML to incorporate the images in reply posts. It's an extra step in the process, and requires learning a few simple HTML tags, but it also enables the images to be used elsewhere.
If you need help with the process, feel free to contact me off-line via the built-in message system (click on name to view profile, and then "send message") or e-mail to [email protected].
Had to give it a try.

bbscode tags don't work. You'll need to use HTML. Note, too, that the "Preview" button will show whether your syntax is working.

Mr. Green, your shop is too well-equipped, too well organized, and too clean. ;-)
This is too much fun. I see the PhotoBucket light.
The pictures are 4 years old, I cleaned the shop just to take them and it has never been that clean since.

Don;
You have a very nice shop. I see you turn wood, I would like to give that a try one day. Every time I look at the cost of a lathe and the turning tools required my idea goes on the back burner.
Question though how did you post a whole string of pictures like that.
Mike
Mike,
PhotoBucket has an option when you are in your album to generate the code dor as many pictures as you select. Then you just copy and paste it into your message.

Mr. Green?
Never heard of him. Is he new?
Anyone with a shop that spiffy deserves to be called "Mister" at least once. ;-)
It may have been easy for you to post the picture, but how many hours did you spend cleaning up the shop and polishing those shaper tables! LOL!
Beautiful and awesome shop!
I spent enough time cleaning that I could have built a highboy.
The shaper tables gleam I owe to Boeshield.
dg,
>those shapers<
Two shapers ! That is pretty much Heaven isn't it ?
First I was going to grump at Will for his cryptic message. English teacher or some such was it ? Oh well there is much I don't understand in this world.
Then I was going to grump about having to "learn" yet another way to reinvent the wheel when we already had a wheel maker in the village. I explored Photo bucket when I first came to Knots and was attempting to post photos more than a year ago.
Back then there seemed to be some disclaimer along the lines of " use this thing at your own risk it is not safe nor secure" so I didn't use it.
mikeddd,
Thank you for your outline of the method to photo land. I sure could have used that a year and a half ago.
Lataxe,
thanks for attempting to drag us into the future.
I must say I don't do a lot of :

And I don't like it !
That is what user interfaces are for !

a totally spoiled Mac user who will now quietly slink off into the shadows to grapple with a dragon in a bucket.
Actually there are three identical 5 horse shapers. The third is out of view to the left. I think it's cheaper to have multiples rather than rack up the setup time. Two have power feeds and one does not.
About the security of photobucket, if you click on my pictures it will take you to my account. As you can see the name the public see's is nyodb. I've always been careful not to put anything more than general location information on Knots.
>it's cheaper to have
>it's cheaper to have multiples rather than rack up the setup time.<
I sure agree there.
I have more than one hand drill. You have several shapers. It's kind of the same thing.
: )
As far as security I was thinking computer related. That my poor digital mate may be conscripted into some insidious bot net or some such. Down loading all manner of evil viruses and goolies. I shudder to my core. I did go and look at all your 14 or so photos full screen. Quite a treat thank you.
You have created a beautiful work oasis ! I do enjoy looking at world class work shops such as yourn. Mine is primitive in comparison. I have been going back and forth on whether to ask this but before I do I want to say I am not being mean just wonneren . . .
. . . surprised you didn't paint the walls and even the upper portions of the shop white or a light color. Would really throw light back onto your work. Maybe too much work to paint the upper part.
Roc,
I rent the building, it is single wall construction. I've been here for 11 years now. I had no idea I would be here this long.
I dream of insulation and plywood walls and white paint! The building is 25x60' and would require considerable time and money to upgrade. I'm on a year to year lease, so I have left it as it is.
As to the bots and viruses, I use Zone Alarm by Zonelabs. It does real time checking without much of a slowdown and has never let me down.
