If you are up for an adventure, nitric acid can be used to produce beautiful deep color. The acid is applied and the surface turnes yellow, the color it would turn with age. Heat is then applied (a heat gun works well) to turn the maple a rich brown color, the more heat the darker the color. Neutralize with water and baking soda, allow to dry and sand. The stain is deep so you will not sand through. An excellent gloss finish is McCloskey Marine Spar Varnish, don't ever use poly. Good Luck
*Hi, A question for Stephen Shepherd: What concentration nitric acid do you use? Where can one find it? TIA Bob
*Bob,Try a 25% acid to 75% water, ALWAYS PUT THE ACID IN THE WATER, if you do it the other way it will explode, very nasty. Any local chemical supply store should have [email protected]
