I have been trying to use the surgical-type masks when sanding but find that it ends up fogging up my safety glasses. Can someone recommend a good mask (full-face) that I can invest in that will allow me to sand safely and be able to see clearly. I’m willing to make a decent investment because I think it’s worth it. Any help on brands, prices, model numbers that anyone out there uses and can recommend? Thanks in advance.

Those surgical type masks don't offer much in the way of real protection. There are a ton of brands on the market that offer what you are looking for. Try this one http://www.labsafety.com/store/product_group.asp?dept_id=1404&cat_prefix=4WA . I have been using the 3M 7800 for about 15 years and it is great. Just make sure you wear it properly. The great thing about this mask is it can be used with a number of different cartridges to give you the protection you need. You can even piggyback a HEPA onto an organic vapor cartridge if you want.
I agrre with Robert I also use the 3M mask. No matter which brand you obtain, just make sure that you can get replacement cartidges and parts for the mask for the next several years.

Thanks Herg and Robert. I'll have to talk to my brother to see if I can get a discount. He works at 3M.Regards,

Buzzsaw,
I use the cheaper model that does not have the eye part...about $39 bucks. I do like, bu do not have the full mask style with the filtered air (about $250). However, I also made some 4x4 sanding blocks with handles cut in and a thin layer of cork on the bottom....I hardley use the sanders anymore. They cut much faster than the power unit, with no vibration, no noise and I run the full length of the wood with the grain....and of course, much more controllable dust.
Good info BG. With just the mask without the eye protection, this wouldn't lead to my safety glasses fogging up, I presume? That is my main complaint at this point with the surgical-type masks I've been using.Regards,

The Dustfoe 88 at about $40 works great and doesn't fog the glasses.
Thanks Dave...Regards,

Buzz',
I use the 3M 7000 series half mask respirator with P100 cartridge filters (organic vapors, 100% particulate). The 7000 is a silicone mask that creates an excellent positive seal, and does not fog glasses or goggles of any sort.
There is a full face mask version of the 7000. Gemplers has some of the best prices, and excellent customer service.

I have a mustache and beard, and as a result, could never find a dust mask that gave a nice tight seal. Recently I tried the Respo-O-Rator, which is sort of a snorkel type set up. It's a bit of a pain taking on and off, but once it's on, it works great (at least for me). The only downside that I've found beyond having to squeeze it up over my big noggin is that if I'm doing heavy labor while wearing it (I used it when I gutted a room in my house) I drool and it comes out of the bottom. Sorry, but no delicate way to put it. It's a little gross when it happens, but not the end of the world. It might have been though if I was leaning over something with a just applied finish.
