Anyone know where I can get 1/2″- 3/4″ collets for turning tool handles? I need the type that I can set into the handle and tighten with a threaded nut. I’m trying to build turning tools with round stock and can’t find what I need. The reason for the collet is so I can interchange chisels. Thanks, Bill

expense
I have some 1/2" HSS drill rod that I grind into odd sized scrapers for very deep bowls. And I just turn a handle for each new too.
Wood would be a lot less expensive.
why not have a maachinist make you one. they are not that complicated. it could be made to your spec and application

Just googled
Bill,
I just googled 1/2" collet and got dozens of hits on router-style replacement collets starting at about 10 bucks each. Not sure how I would go about mounting one of these deep enough into a wooden handle where I could also have enough remaining on the outside of the tool to tighten / grip the cutter, but it might be worth a try.
I have to agree with some of the other posts - I took the easy way out and turned a new handle for each of the cutters, then used epoxy and a cheap ferrule to hold the cutter.
Good luck, Mike
We always turned new handles and used CA glue and then wrapped the end of the shaft with nylon cord coated with more CA. The nylon wrap was tied the same way boy scouts whip rope ends. Learned this from bowl turner David Ellsworth who always had us make our own tools.
Make your own collet?
Billy, go to the local hardware store and pick up a ferrule to pipe adapter from the plumbing department. You will have to drill out the stop inside of the adapter but they are brass and easy to machine. I used 3/4 pipe covered with hose for the handle and used a brass cap for the end.

collet for tool handle
Lee Valley sells handles that have a 3/4" collet, but I don't think they sell components to make you own. They do sell one that fits on shop made handles, but it uses a grub screw to retain the tool.
